East to West and Back Again
As a photographer, my camera is always with me. Who knows what I will find...
When discerning the world through a lens, wherever you are, and even in the most seemingly mundane environments, there is always a story to tell, a message to relate. The subject and substance is there for us to discover. Its Interpretation is a reflection of our mental perspective. Not only must our eyes see, our mind must see also. Once found, the question becomes, are we up for the challenge?
If I am like most photographers, we see a picture in everything we observe. Each of us, however, has our own particular quest. Looking over my work through the years, it is clear that I am into nature, wildlife, and the honest beauty of our environment. With this, conservation, preservation, protection of species are words that are familiar in my consciousness.
I have always been in close touch with the earth, whether it is digging in the soil or barefooting across fields on the family farm, picking wild blackberries and plums on my way. I grew up outdoors in the rural South with plenty of land on which to roam. This childhood created an unbreakable bond with the natural environment. Now, as an adult I am "digging" into nature's resources and connective forces through photography.
My love of the west, where I have lived for many years, as well as my home in the east, has provided numerous opportunities to tell my story through my photography. As a frequent traveler driving across the United States from the east coast to the west and places in between, I see our country as an open book, waiting to disclose its secrets. The photos taken along the way only tease the curiosity until I find my way back to discover their hidden treasures.
My various roles as musician, avant-garde teacher in learning, director of youth in music, science competition coach of knowledge and a proponent of lifelong exploration, merge with my pursuits as writer, artist, photographer and traveler.
Some years ago, I embarked upon an ambitious learning venture focusing on my photographic skills, armed with a serious camera upgrade and a small collection of lenses. With these I set out to explore this intriguing natural world. Though I have always felt comfortable outdoors, I have realized, through my photographic pursuits, that there was much I didn't know. It has been, and continues to be, quite an adventure!
